A lot of parents think about getting their children orthodontic treatment, only in the most severe cases, where they are facing eating or speaking problems. While there are definitely a lot of health issues and also benefits involved in orthodontic treatment, many parents neglect the fact that it’s not always health alone, but also their kid’s appearance that matters.

Children can be subject to significant psychological problems due to aesthetic issues and the earlier they are treated, the better it will be for them as they grow up. Getting children regularly examined for the development of any extra growth or misalignments in their dental structure will help detect bite problems at an early age and get them treated more effectively.

Smile is an important part of anyone’s appearance and it reflects the image of a person. Children with a “bad” smile can develop inferiority complexes and low self-esteem issues that can potentially haunt them till a much later age. Protruded or misaligned teeth can also make children susceptible to several oral diseases as well.

Children with speech problems can develop an aversion to people or lack the confidence to interact in public situations, inhibiting their personal growth. Lack of confidence can affect both professional and personal life, so early treatment is always recommended for children to boost their self-esteem and confidence, before it can take a toll on them on a more serious level in the future. Although nowadays adults can easily get orthodontic treatment, it is a known fact that the younger the patients are, the easier it is to treat them and the higher the chances of success are.

Once adult teeth are all developed, children dental restructuring has been proven to be more effective than if done at a later age. Once the jaws have finished growing, in adults, it can be more difficult to make significant changes. Orthodontic treatment at a young age can ensure a properly shaped and well defined jawline structure.

Malocclusions can occur to anyone and teeth alignment issues are a very common problem these days. As successful orthodontic treatment is easily available nowadays, don’t neglect the oral health issues of your child and get them treated before it’s too late. Dental malocclusions are something you should seriously put some thought to for both the child’s dental and psychological health.

Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for teens. For many adults, the thought of having metal braces is enough to discourage them from receiving treatment. Technologies have come a long way since the days of bulky, highly noticeable metal braces from your childhood. Adults no longer have to fear facing co-workers and friends with colored rubber bands and metal laced throughout their mouths. We have several options of braces and appliances that are comfortable, aesthetic, and customized to meet your needs.

• Ceramic braces Ceramic braces are like metal braces except they match the natural color of your teeth.

• Lingual braces Lingual braces are attached to your back teeth only, so no one will know that you are wearing braces.

• Invisalign Invisalign consists of clear plastic trays that you can remove for eating and brushing your teeth. A series of trays are prepared by your orthodontist to progressively shift your teeth into their ideal positions. Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments for adults.

• Smart Brackets Smart brackets utilize a technology known as “self-ligation” that allow the wires to slide back and forth within the bracket. No elastic or steel ties are used with smart brackets. All of these options lead to a more attractive smile that you do not have to feel embarrassed about.

Along with straightening your teeth, braces also provide the following benefits:

• Better oral hygiene
• Bite improvement
• Easier to clean aligned teeth
• Less complicated dental procedures
• Eliminate the embarrassment of crooked teeth

Once you’re ready to get started with your orthodontic treatment we can help you decide which option will best suit your needs. We will assess your situation and get you headed towards a more beautiful smile.

For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontic treatment. There is more to orthodontic treatment than just esthetics. Having braces is not just about being happy with the way your smile looks. Orthodontic therapy has many other benefits that improve your oral health and quality of life.

Reduce Tooth Decay Misaligned teeth are very difficult to keep as clean as straight teeth. This means crooked teeth typically develop more cavities between them, simply because they are not thoroughly cleaned each time you brush. Flossing is essential, but due to the accumulated bacteria throughout the day, crooked teeth may still get cavities.

Prevent Tooth Wear And Damaged Restorations If pressure is distributed unevenly across your teeth, the enamel can quickly wear away. This can be seen as flat, worn edges along the tops of the teeth, or even gum recession near the necks of the teeth. Correcting the alignment of the bite will allow the upper and lower teeth to fit together properly and eliminate the risk of broken fillings and enamel.

Combat Gum Disease Misaligned teeth are extremely susceptible to gum disease. Plaque and food easily build up in areas that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush or floss. As a result, these misaligned teeth quickly develop gingivitis around them, which progresses to the point where the gums actually start detaching from the tooth. Straightening the teeth will make oral hygiene efforts more productive, and gum disease easier to combat.

Manage TMJ Disorders TMJ disorder is sometimes caused by an improper biting relationship of the upper and lower jaws. This causes the TMJ to be compromised during biting and chewing throughout the day. Over time, strain to the joint begins to cause discomfort, swelling, and even internal damage to the ligaments and muscles that surround it. Correcting the bite relationship allows the TMJ to function without excess strain, eliminating side effects like pain, headaches, and disorders of the jaw.

Having braces can be a lot of fun, but they do require a little bit of work on your part. There are things you need to know about properly taking care of your braces and appliances to prevent damage and keep your treatment on schedule. Braces don’t have to be a hassle, if you are mindful of what you are eating throughout treatment you can avoid a lot of trouble. Sure it is tough to give up certain foods, but it will all be worth it in the end when you have those gorgeous teeth you’ve always wanted! Your teeth and jaw can only move into their correct positions if your braces stay intact. Here is a look at the foods you should stay away from when you’re wearing braces.

Tough Foods Harder foods can damage your braces and that is the last thing you want. Avoid tough stuff like peanut brittle, hard candies, pretzels, pizza crust, popcorn, corn on the cob, bagels, ice, or anything else that may damage or get stuck in your braces.

Candy It is always wise to avoid sugary foods whenever possible, but this is especially important while you’re wearing braces. Candies, gum and sugary sodas have the potential to cause heavy plaque build-up, which if not carefully cleaned soon after consumption can lead to swollen gums, white spots on your teeth and decay.

Acidity Acidic food items are bad for your teeth and when you have braces you don’t want to develop permanent stains.

Chewing Gum Chewing gum should be avoided because it can get stuck in the braces.

We can’t wait to help you achieve and maintain a beautiful smile! If you have any additional questions about whether a specific food is safe to eat with braces, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 203-513-2014

Poor oral hygiene may result in bad breath and isolate your child from family and friends. It can cause self esteem issues and bullying while at school or around other children. It is essential for parents to teach their children good oral hygiene so that these embarrassing issues do not occur.

Starting Good Oral Hygiene Habits Early Some parents do not take this matter seriously when children are younger. Parents think that because their children have baby teeth that they will eventually lose, that good oral hygiene is not important. The majority of children start losing their baby teeth from six years of age and permanent teeth erupt from twelve to fourteen years of age. If you want your child to be ready to properly care for their permanent teeth when they come in, you need to start educating them as early as possible.

Decay There are other factors that contribute bad breath in kids. A child who has a lot of oral problems and decaying teeth may find that they have bad breath regularly. This is simply because of the bacteria that eats away at the teeth, which then causes the tooth to decay.

Sweets If your child eats a lot of sweets or chocolate, these foods create a good breeding ground for bacteria in their mouth. When this bacteria is not cleaned it can cause tooth decay. Dental fillings can be a very important treatment as it saves your child from losing his or her teeth and also preventing the child from bad breath.

Orthodontics And Oral Hygiene One of the most important things a person can do to achieve a beautiful smile is to clean their teeth properly everyday. Patients who do not keep their teeth clean will spend more time in orthodontic treatment and may require more frequent visits. Helping our patients protect this valuable investment is our top priority. We will spend a great deal of time reviewing proper oral hygiene during your orthodontic treatment.

Many parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to see an Orthodontist for a consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that an orthodontist examine children by age seven.

To create a smile that lasts a lifetime, your child needs teeth that are straight and jaws that are aligned properly. That all begins with the baby teeth, the way they are aligned, when and how they fall out, and how much room they are allowing or not allowing for the emergence of permanent adult teeth.

Orthodontic Exam By Age Seven The transition from primary teeth to permanent teeth is extremely important. Where primary teeth are located is important. When primary teeth fall out is important. Primary teeth set the foundation for permanent teeth and their proper positions. That is why it is important to have an orthodontist examine your child’s mouth while they still have primary teeth. Your child’s teeth may look straight, but there may be underlying problems with the bite.
